Guinea pigs (also commonly called cavies after their scientificname -Cavia porcellus meaning pig-like cavy ) arerodents belonging to the family Caviidae and the genus Cavia.Despite their common name, the animals are not pigs, nor do theycome from Guinea. They are originally native to the Andes, they are closely relatedto several species which are commonly found in the grassy plainsand plateaus of the region. The guinea pig plays an important rolein the folk culture of indigenous South Americans, especially as afood source, but also in folk medicine and in community religiousceremonies. Since the 1960s, the guinea pig has become increasingly importantas a staple food in the Andes, and efforts have been made toincrease consumption of the animal outside South America. InWestern societies, the guinea pig has enjoyed widespread popularityas a household pet since its introduction by European traders inthe sixteenth century. Because of its docile nature, the relative ease of caretaking, andits responsiveness to handling and feeding, the guinea pig remainsa popular pet choice. Organizations devoted to competitive breedingof guinea pigs have been formed worldwide, and a large number ofspecialized breeds of guinea pig, with varying coat colors andcompositions, are cultivated by breeders. "Guinea pig" is also used as a by-word in English for a subject ofexperimentation; this usage became common in the first half of thetwentieth century. Biological experimentation on guinea pigs hasbeen carried out since the seventeenth century; the animals werefrequently used in scientific contexts in the nineteenth andtwentieth centuries, but have since been largely replaced by otherrodents, such as mice and rats. They are still used in researchprimarily as models for human medical conditions such as juvenilediabetes, tuberculosis, scurvy, and pregnancy complications. GuineaPigs are still kept in the Andes where they were first discoveredas a food source.
Hey there, absolutely nothing. When the come out they are already quite hairy and can run a little distance. So just basically leave them be for a week or two, so they can bond to the mother and then they should be right. Just check once in a while before the birth to see if they are born.. coz its quite a possibility that she might have a dead young. if she does remove it right away. Just remember to keep on topping up food and water. :OD But after you've left them for a while... start to handle them if u want them to be tame. Otherwise it getts harder and harder to tame the older they get.

\n. \n. \n"Reality," the concept, is contrasted with a wide variety of other concepts, largely depending upon the intellectual discipline. It can help us to understand what we mean by "reality" to note that what we say is not real because we see it through different perspectives, therefore there is no basis for reality. But usually if there is no original and related proofs, it isn't reality.\nIn philosophy, reality is contrasted with nonexistence (penguins do exist; so they are real) and mere possibility (a mountain made of gold is merely possible, but is not known to be realâthat is, actual rather than possibleâunless one is discovered). Sometimes philosophers speak as though reality is contrasted with existence itself, though ordinary language and many other philosophers would treat these as synonyms. They have in mind the notion that there is a kind of reality â a mental or intentional reality, perhaps â that imaginary objects, such as the aforementioned golden mountain, have. Alexius Meinong is famous, or infamous, for holding that such things have so-called subsistence, and thus a kind of reality, even while they do not actually exist. Most philosophers find the very notion of "subsistence" mysterious and unnecessary, and one of the shibboleths and starting points of 20th century analytic philosophy has been the forceful rejection of the notion of subsistence â of "real" but nonexistent objects.\n. \nSo, basically, "reality" is just the electrical signals sent to your brain to describe your surroundings based on already known knowledge.\n. \nBut there is a difference between reality and fact and truth.\n. \nyou made my brain hurt.this didnt help any.i am so confused!:(ooooooohhhhhhhh........

The idea of what is real and what is not is based upon a person's perception. You know that the events unfolding before your eyes at the movies are not real. You also know that the events of a theatrical presentation are fictional although the actors are real.. You are usually aware of the fact that the events occurring at a particular moment in your life are not real only when you awaken from the dream/nightmare. Perhaps it is all a dream and nothing is real and when death comes I will be awaken from this dream to realize that as a soul I am real but this world is simply an illusion or Virtual Reality.. Cogito ergo sum. I know I am real; you know you are real.

No. They originated in the area of Bolivia, Ecuador and Peru in South America. There are a large number of theories on why they came to be known as "Guinea Pigs", one being that their Latin name gave rise to confusion about them being "pigs" and that "Guinea" may be a European corruption of Guiana.

You can buy a guinea pig from breeders, pet shops, newpapers, ads on internets and lots more places.
A pet store. Not a pet store. Go to a shelter. There are lots of guinea pigs in need of a good home. Or you can also search your local paper for people who can no longer care for their piggies and want to give them a good home. Just make sure you do lots of research before adopting one. They needs LOTS of room to run around. Store-bought cages are never big enough.

They are herbivores. Guineapigs may fight and draw blood but they won't eat each other, not even newborn babies as they are born fully furred.
Yes they are smart for rodents, because you can let them run around your house (if you want to) and train them to use a litter box.
Guinea fowl: a west African bird having dark plumage mottled with white; native to Africa but raised for food in many parts of the world . Guinea (which is officially the Republic of Guinea République de Guinée), is a country in West Africa. Formerly known as French Guinea (Guinée française), it is today sometimes called Guinea-Conakry to distinguish it from its neighbor Guinea-Bissau. . there is no guinea pig talk just talk softly to your guinea pig so it doesn't get frightened.
They are inexpensive, they are easy to take care of, and they are cute and cuddly
Well, you get it out by petting it for about 5 min. first, then start petting it near the stomach area, just beneath the arms. Slowly pick it up like that, then take it out of it's cage and bring it close to your stomach if you want to hold it. Then put your hand underneath it's bottom so it feels safe. It will try to curve or jump out or squeeze out, but don't let it do that. Hold softly but firmly, too. Your piggy will feel safe and relaxed!
Is there a food that you can buy at a store for guinea pigs that gives them the nutrition they need from fruits and veggies instead of buying real fruits and veggies?
No, they'll need real fruit and vegetables as well as their usual dried food. It's not just about 'nutrients', it's to do with fibre and the way they digest things.
open the cage door and grab the guinea pig...its that easy I wouldn't grab them because they are small and can be quite fragile. If they will not come when you call you should either gently pick them up and out or tempt them out with food.
Well if you ever come across someone who has seen/held/witnessed a guinea pig race then how 'bout asking them? If not then just think for yourself. It isn't a tough one to work out.
No, Papua New Guinea is in the Pacific. It is the country on the eastern half of the island of New Guinea, although it is sometimes called New Guinea for short. The western half of New Guinea is Indonesian territory. Papua New Guine and New Guinea are completely different to the country of Guinea (officially the 'Republic of Guinea') in west Africa.
Guinea is a country in West Africa. However this animal originated in South America. It is possible that the name of Guinea got mixed up with Guiana (which is in South America). Or it is possible that, when the animal was introduced to England or North America someone used the name Guinea because the though it was appropriate for this new import from a faraway and strange place.
I am what I am, So I must be me. No one can be me Better than myself, you see.
guinea pigs need timothy hay it is more than 75% of everything they eat if you dont get timothy hay it will die in a week. they need timothy hay!!! I have a guinea pig of my own and her name is patches she loves timothy hay. Guinea pigs need carrots, potatoes, lettuce, apples (but without the skin they can choke), it is healthy for them. the other reason they need those things is because their teeth can grow. as they grow they curve and their teeth can grow so far and puncture her upper mouth. so every day give her baby carrots they trim her teeth and always have 2-3 little wood bricks you can get them at petsmart or petco. also when you get guinea pig food get one that has a lot of different kinds of food in it, it is alot healthier. and remember to give it fresh water every day
Yes, indeed it is. I work at an animal shelter, and once in a while we get a rodent that is about the size of a car, maybe a bit smaller. They can be extremely ferocious, and in a bad mood--deadly. One of my friends was killed by one. But yes, they exist, and if you ever happen to find one, this is how you should act: -Do not make eye contact. -Slowly start backing away. -If there are trees or another hiding place, hide until it leaves. -If not, don't run, they will outrun you, just stay calm and do not bother it.
accualy ,no. they get ginea because when sailors from england had guinea pigs brought overfrom sounth amierica th-y costed 1 guinea
